Kunming to Dali Train 2026: 2-Hour Fares, Schedule and Old Town Transfer

7 min readLast updated:

Most travelers assume the Kunming to Dali train drops you inside Dali's old town. It does not. Dali Railway Station sits in Xiaguan, the modern administrative district about 13 km (8 miles) south of the old walled town, and you'll need a bus or taxi to finish the trip. Plan for that transfer and the rest of the journey is easy: the high-speed line covers the roughly 175 km between Kunming and Dali in about 2 hours, with dozens of daily departures.

For step-by-step guidance on registering, choosing between 12306 and Trip.com, and boarding with only your passport, see our complete guide to booking China's high-speed trains.

How long is the Kunming to Dali train and what does it cost

D-series high-speed trains leave Kunming South Railway Station (昆明南站) for Dali Railway Station roughly every 20-30 minutes between around 06:30 and 21:30. Fastest services cover the distance in about 2 hours; a few slower D-trains that make extra stops (Chuxiong, Nanhua, Xiangyun) take closer to 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes.

Trip.com shows English schedules and lets you pay by card, which is why most foreign travelers use it. The free, official alternative is 12306 (China Railway's own booking site and app), but it requires a Chinese phone number for SMS verification and the interface is only partly translated. If you already have a China SIM or eSIM and don't mind the extra setup, 12306 charges no booking fee at all.

Why Dali Railway Station is nowhere near Dali old town

This is the part that catches people out. Dali Railway Station opened in 2018 as part of the Guangtong-Dali line, and like a lot of newer Chinese high-speed stations, it was built in an area with room to expand rather than in the historic center. It sits in Xiaguan (下关), which is Dali City's modern commercial and administrative core, not the old town (大理古城) that shows up in every photo of the region.

The distance from the station to the old town's north or south gate is about 13-15 km depending on which entrance you use, and travel time runs 30-50 minutes depending on traffic and which transfer option you pick. Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • Public bus: Bus No. 8 and the "Ancient City Tourist Line" run from the station forecourt to the old town, journey time about 40-50 minutes, fare ¥3-5. Cheapest option but slower, and awkward with heavy luggage.
  • Taxi: Roughly 40-50 minutes depending on traffic, ¥50-70 metered. Easiest with bags, and you can request drop-off right at your guesthouse door.
  • Ride-hailing (Didi): Similar price and time to a taxi, bookable in the Didi app if you have it set up, with the route and driver shown in advance.
  • Hotel pickup: Many guesthouses in the old town arrange a car for ¥60-100 if you message them your train number ahead of time.

Erhai Lake itself is closer to the station than the old town is, roughly 6-8 km depending on which shoreline point you're headed for, but the popular lakeside towns (Shuanglang, Wase, Caicun) are on the far side of the lake and still take 45-90 minutes by bus or car from the station.

Getting from Kunming South to the platform, and what to expect on arrival

Kunming South Railway Station is itself about 25 km from downtown Kunming and connected to the city by metro Line 1 and Line 4, so build in 45-60 minutes to reach the station from a central hotel, plus the usual 30-45 minutes of buffer for security and boarding that Chinese stations require. Bring your passport: security staff check ID against the ticket at both the security screening and again at the platform gate.

On arrival in Dali, the station building has clear signage in English and Chinese for taxi rank, bus stop, and the metro-style ticket gates. The taxi queue can be long around midday when several trains arrive close together; if you see a long line and you're not carrying much, the bus stop (to your right as you exit) usually moves faster. Buy a bus ticket from the machine or pay the conductor directly in cash.

Continuing on to Lijiang

Many travelers treat Dali as a stop on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang corridor rather than an endpoint. If that's your plan, the Kunming to Lijiang train runs direct in about 3.5-4 hours and skips the Dali transfer entirely, while the Dali to Lijiang train takes roughly 1 hour and is the easiest short hop in the region. Both Kunming and Lijiang are worth a night or two on either side of Dali rather than rushing straight through.

What to do before you board

Book your seat on Trip.com or 12306 at least a few days out in peak season, note that you're arriving in Xiaguan and not the old town, and decide your transfer method before you land so you're not deciding under pressure with a bag in hand. If you're heading straight to the old town, the bus is fine with a day pack; if you have suitcases or you're arriving after dark, spend the extra ¥40-50 on a taxi or Didi.
