China Summer Train Travel 2026: Booking Around Record Crowds

China’s trains are carrying record traffic in 2026. The network handled more than 2.3 billion passenger trips in the first half of the year, including 12.31 million trips by foreign passengers. For a July or August itinerary, the main risk is not understanding the train. It is waiting too long for a popular departure.

Book the hard leg first, especially Beijing–Xi’an, Beijing–Shanghai, Shanghai–Hangzhou, Chengdu–Chongqing, or any route connecting to a major scenic area on a Friday or Sunday. Then shape hotels and local plans around the confirmed train.

A third-party platform can accept a reservation earlier, but it cannot issue a ticket before China Railway releases inventory. Early submission places your request in a queue; it is not a confirmed seat. Read the status message and wait for the ticket number before treating the booking as final.

12306 or Trip.com for a foreign traveler?

12306 is the official platform and does not add an agency booking fee. Its English website and app accept passport passengers, but account verification, payment, and waitlist screens can require more setup. Use the same passport spelling on every booking.

Trip.com offers an English booking flow, international payment support, and an early reservation queue. It may charge a service fee or include paid options, so read the total before checkout. The actual railway ticket comes from China Railway either way.

Do not buy the same seat request on multiple platforms unless you understand each cancellation rule. Duplicate requests can lock funds and create confusion without increasing the railway’s available inventory.

What details must match the passport?

Enter the passport number, nationality, date of birth, and name exactly as the booking platform requests. Keep the same document for booking, station entry, boarding, and any refund. If you renew or replace the passport between purchase and travel, contact the platform before the departure day.

China uses the passport as the train ticket for most journeys. You usually do not collect a paper ticket. At the station, use a manual or passport-enabled gate. If the automatic reader fails, show the passport and booking record to staff.

Children’s ticket rules depend on age under the current railway system, not height alone. Add the child as a passenger and carry the document used in the booking. Do not assume a child can pass on the adult’s passport record.

How early should you reach the station?

Arrive 45–60 minutes early at a major station in summer. Use 75–90 minutes for Beijing West, Shanghai Hongqiao, Guangzhou South, or another large terminal on your first rail day. The time covers security, the correct entrance, passport checks, and a long walk to the gate.

City names are not enough. Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other cities have several stations, sometimes an hour apart. Save the full Chinese station name, such as 上海虹桥站 for Shanghai Hongqiao, before ordering a car.

Security checks resemble airport screening but liquids are usually allowed. Knives, flammable sprays, and some large aerosol cans can be stopped. Power banks should carry a clear compliant marking, and local enforcement may change. Pack questionable items where you can remove them without opening your whole suitcase.

What if your preferred train is sold out?

First, join the 12306 waitlist if available and choose several acceptable trains. Official waitlist orders can receive inventory released by cancellations. Do not depend on repeated manual refreshing alone.

Second, search neighboring times and stations. Shanghai station and Shanghai Hongqiao are not interchangeable for every route, but checking both can reveal seats. In Beijing, do not switch from Beijing South to Beijing West without measuring the city transfer.

Third, test a sensible split. A direct Shanghai–Changsha train may be full while Shanghai–Nanchang and Nanchang–Changsha have seats. Leave a large buffer and keep both segments at the same station. Separate tickets do not guarantee protection when the first train is late.

Fourth, consider a flight or overnight train for long routes. A four-hour detour to preserve a preferred train type rarely improves the trip.
