Qianfo Mountain, also called Thousand Buddha Mountain, combines an urban climb, Buddhist remains, Shun traditions, wooded paths, and broad views across Jinan. It is a good choice when you want an active morning or afternoon without leaving the city for a remote mountain area.

The name can cause confusion. The wider national scenic area covers several hills and is divided into the Qianfo Mountain, Fohui Mountain, Youyan Mountain, and Jinjiling sections. Most first-time visitors mean the main Qianfo Mountain park around Xingguo Chan Temple, Lishan Courtyard, and the summit paths. Do not try to cover the entire national scenic area in one visit.

Opening information for 2026

An official notice published in February 2026 identifies 5:00 to 22:30 as the park's normal daily opening schedule. It lists separate hours of 5:00 to 21:00 for Xingguo Chan Temple and Guanyin Garden, and 7:30 to 16:30 for Sanqing Temple.

These times can change during major events, crowded holidays, severe weather, or temporary safety controls. Check the Qianfo Mountain scenic-area announcements shortly before departure, especially if you intend to arrive early, stay after sunset, or enter one of the religious compounds.

A Jinan government visitor page listed general admission at ¥30 in July 2025. Because that page is not a 2026 tariff notice, use the figure only as a planning reference and confirm the current price, concessions, and any separate internal charges at the official ticket channel or entrance.

How to reach Qianfo Mountain by metro

The clearest current public-transport instructions come from the city's 2026 visitor notice. Use Qianfoshan Station on Metro Line 4. From Exit A, walk west along Jingshi Road, turn south onto Qianfoshan Road, and continue toward the north gate. From Exit B1, walk east along Jingshi Road, then south along Lishan Road toward the east gate.

Choose the entrance that matches the places you care about rather than treating the first gate you see as mandatory. Save the attraction's Chinese name, 千佛山风景名胜区, and the selected gate in your map app. This reduces confusion with entrances belonging to other sections of the larger scenic area.

What makes the mountain worth visiting?

The official scenic-area profile presents two cultural threads. The first is the tradition linking ancient Lishan with Shun, a legendary early ruler said to have cultivated land here. Lishan Courtyard, Shun Temple, Sansheng Hall, and the Dashun Stone Picture Garden interpret that tradition.

The second thread is Buddhist. The official profile traces the mountain's Buddhist heritage to the Sui and Tang periods and identifies Xingguo Chan Temple, the Qianfo Cliff carvings, Huangshi Cliff carvings, the Great Buddha Head carving, the Kaiyuan Temple site, and Maitreya Garden among the wider area's cultural resources. For a first visit, concentrate on a few places and read their signs instead of rushing past every named structure.

The State Council approved Qianfo Mountain as a national scenic area in 2017, following provincial scenic-area recognition in 1995. This designation applies to the wider protected landscape, not just the main paid park.

A sensible first-visit route

Start with the park map at your chosen entrance. Make Xingguo Chan Temple and the nearby historic carvings your cultural anchor, then add Lishan Courtyard if you want to understand the Shun side of the mountain. Continue upward only as far as your energy, footwear, and the weather allow. The higher paths provide the city-facing perspective promoted in official seasonal guidance.

Keep the descent flexible. Returning through a different gate can be useful only if you have checked where it leaves you and how you will continue your journey. Otherwise, retrace the familiar route. During busy events, staff may introduce one-way pedestrian controls between Lishan Courtyard and Xingguo Chan Temple, so follow temporary signs even if they differ from a saved map.

Best seasons and photography

Spring suits a slower walk among fresh foliage, while shaded sections can still feel cool early in the day. The city's official autumn guidance highlights red and golden foliage around the mountain, temple roofs, and summit views. Seasonal color and flowering dates vary with the weather. Treat official bloom or foliage reports as snapshots, not guarantees. For photographs, the strongest visual contrast usually comes from pairing stone, red walls, tiled roofs, or carved surfaces with the surrounding trees. Ask before photographing worshippers, ceremonies, or interiors.

Practical advice for the climb

Wear shoes with dependable grip. This is a landscaped mountain attraction, but stairs and sloping paths still require attention.
