Baiyun Mountain
Baiyun Mountain ("White Cloud Mountain") is the green lung of Guangzhou, a cluster of more than thirty peaks rising on the city's northern edge. Named for the clouds that wreathe its summits after rain, it has been a beloved retreat for over a thousand years and remains the locals' favourite place to hike, exercise and escape the urban heat. From its highest point, Moxing Ridge at 382 metres, the whole sprawling city unfolds below.

What to see and do
The mountain is a vast scenic area threaded with walking trails, pavilions and gardens. Energetic visitors hike up shaded paths from the south gate; others ride the cable car for an effortless ascent with views over the forest canopy. Don't miss Yuntai Garden near the main entrance, a beautifully landscaped flower garden, and Mingchun Valley, home to a large aviary. Scattered teahouses and lookout terraces invite you to pause, and on a clear day the panorama stretches across the Pearl River delta to the towers of downtown.

Opening hours
Hours vary by gate: the south and west gates run close to around the clock, while the north gate typically operates from about 07:00 to 22:00. The cable car and shuttle buses run on their own shorter schedule, roughly 07:30 to 20:00, and individual gardens keep daytime hours too. Early morning is when locals arrive in force to walk and exercise.
Tickets
The main mountain area charges a small entrance fee, just a few yuan, payable at the gate on the day (no advance booking needed). The cable car and shuttle add a separate one-way fare on top, and standalone attractions such as Yuntai Garden charge their own small admission. Prices shift occasionally, so treat any figure you see online as a rough guide rather than fixed.
Getting there
Take Metro Line 2 to Baiyun Park Station for the south gate, or Line 3 to Meihuayuan or Line 6 to Baiyun Culture Square for other entrances, then a short walk, bus or taxi to the gate itself. Several gates ring the mountain, so pick the one nearest your plan rather than defaulting to the busiest.
Best time to visit
Autumn brings the clearest skies and the sharpest city views, and the air is freshest the morning after rain, when the namesake clouds drift over the peaks. Avoid hazy summer afternoons if you are coming for the view. Allow half a day to combine a hike or cable-car ride with the gardens.
Practical notes
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, especially if you plan to hike rather than ride. The mountain is busiest at weekends and on public holidays, when locals flock to the trails.
